“Internet of Things” with visiting speaker Alasdair Allan

Thursday, 12 October – 18:30 –  Sanderson Suite, Claremont Hotel, Douglas, IM1 2LX

Dr Allan is a Scientist, Author, Hacker, and Journalist. He is the author of a number of books, and sometimes also stands in front of cameras. You can often find him at conferences talking about interesting things, or deploying sensors to measure them. He caused a privacy scandal by uncovering that your iPhone was recording your location all the time. The resulting controversy even got a name, #locationgate. It caused several class action lawsuits, and a U.S. Senate hearing.

His presentation to BCS Isle of Man members and guests focuses on “The Internet of Things” ̶̶̶ an emerging technology by which home appliances (like your fridge, security system, electric meter, etc); your car; as well of course as your phone, may all communicate with each other   ̶̶̶   and with other devices and businesses. This is supposed to offer improved convenience and value   ̶̶̶   but is likely to also introduce new risks, especially threats to your security and privacy.

His YouTube video “The Little Things of Horror” (22 minutes) provides a hint as to the sort of content we might expect on 12 October.
