IPTV – The Future of Broadcasting

June 9th, 2011

The Isle of Man Section of the BCS would like to invite you to an event titled IPTV – The Future of Broadcasting being held at the Claremont Hotel on the 23rd of June 2011.

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is becoming more mainstream as high speed broadband becomes more widely available. For example, it is estimated that global IPTV subscribers will increase from 28 million in 2009 to 83 million in 2013.

Dr Keith Mitchell will explain how and why companies are sending television programmes over IP data networks. The session will include brief overviews of key technologies, current trends and hot topics for this fast paced industry with some live demonstrations. He will also discuss research projects and commercialisation at Lancaster University and how such technology is being evaluated with a series of regional and rural Living Labs to gain valuable insights into IPTV based services in rural communities with the latest developments in peer to peer (P2P) and wireless mesh network technology.

With the shift to mobile users, limited local content from the BBC licence fee and more digital production expected from the £50 million pound Media Development Fund budget – IPTV with personalised services is the future of broadcasting.

Speaker Biography
Dr. Keith Mitchell is a Research Fellow at Lancaster University and co-founder of 21media Innovations Ltd, a technology spin-out based in InfoLab21. He is one of the leading British specialists in human-computer interaction, context-aware computing and multimedia systems.
