Our event for this month will be a visit to the highly automated “state of the art” Douglas Water Treatment Works on the 16th of March commencing 6.15pm. We will be hosted by the Chief Executive of the Isle of Man Water Authority, John Smith, and his staff. The visit should last until approximately 8pm.

For safety reasons this event is limited to 20 people and preference will be given to BCS members. Therefore, book early by emailing publicity06-at-bcs.org.im.

Those included in the visit should park their cars in the adjacent Isle of Man college car park and walk the short distance to the Water Treatment Works. For those unfamiliar with the area the following picture should assist.
High heels should not be worn as much of the visit will consist of walking over gratings. Those who suffer from vertigo should inform the IOMWA staff to facilitate a less vertiginous route round the works.

Leonard Cheshire Disability Centre is now able to offer disabled and older people in their community the access to IT facilities many people take for granted.

BCS Members worked with Keith Fitton, Service Manager of Leonard Cheshire, to ensure that the critical items were secured for the drop-in centre. BCS Members Nick Smith from Phoenix IT, John Cannell from RBS, Tracy Kinrade from Central Software and Peter Jackson from Open Systems Management worked together to plan, source and install all the IT requirements needed for four disabled users at the centre.

The centre was opened by the island’s Department of Health and Social Security Chief Executive David Killip, who said: ‘It’s clearly going to be a wonderful facility.’

A wiki is a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. Our next event will present ManxWiki as a local initiative using this technology to provide a comprehensive and current information source about the Isle of Man. Here’s what the Wiki says about itself:

Wikis are information websites that allow any person to register as a user for the purpose of adding to the pages directly with their knowledge and experience on the specified subject. In the case of ManxWiki the subject is simply “The Isle of Man”, any aspect of local life that is deemed to be of value or interest for the benefit of others.

The beauty of ManxWiki is that if you find a page that is missing data that you already know about, YOU can easily add to the page for the benefit of others.

Come and meet the team behind ManxWiki, learn more about how wikis work and find out if you can help build up this new and exciting resource.

Venue
Claremont Hotel on Wednesday 12th November 2008: Doors open at 18:00

Speaker Gary Shilling & Mark Atherton

(some light refreshments will be available prior to the commencement of the event)
